The Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot at Hulu has found a new lead in Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Armstrong joins Sarah Michelle Gellar in the pilot for the upcoming series. The reboot was announced in February. We don’t know the exact plot details or who Armstrong is playing, but sources close to the production have said that the series will focus on a new vampire slayer with Gellar appearing in a recurring role as Buffy.
Here’s what Sarah Michelle Gellar had to say about the casting.
“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
The show is being written and showran by Nora and Lila Zuckerman. Chloe Zhao is on board to direct and executive produce for her company Book of Shadows. Gellar is also on board as an Executive Producer with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.
The Zuckerman’s had this to say about the series.
“We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one,”
Who Is Involved With The Reboot Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer?
Chloe Zhao exploded on the scene in Hollywood with her film Nomadland, which won 3 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. She then co-wrote and directed the 2021 Marvel Studios film Eternals. Most recently she co-wrote and directed the film Hamnet with Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal.
Ryan Kiera Armstrong recently appeared in the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew. She’s also been in shows like Anne With An E, American Horror Story, and the upcoming FX series The Lowdown. She also starred in Firestarter with Zac Efron.
The Zuckerman sisters showran the massive Peacock series Poker Face for creator Rian Johnson. That series is among the most successful in the history of the streamer.
For those wondering, Joss Whedon will have no involvement in the reboot. He has not worked in Hollywood in any capacity since facing misconduct allegations in 2021.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer started off as a movie in 1992 and aired on the WB for five seasons from 1997-2001, and then for two more on UPN. The spinoff Angel ran on the WB for five seasons from 1999-2004.
