BOOM! Studios plan to celebrate Free Comic Book Day 2025 with Power Rangers Prime / VR Troopers, and indeed, it’s quite a celebration. For as you can tell by the title: it’s actually two comics in one. One is a story about a cute doggie in Power Rangers Prime, and the other is about the VR Troopers apprehending some dangerous criminals. Regardless of which you choose to read first though, you can guarantee that you will be entertained.

Power Rangers Prime / VR Troopers: The Good

Since Power Rangers Prime / VR Troopers is essentially two comics in one, this review will cover both of them. However, in both cases, the story is the best part of them. Especially for Power Rangers Prime, in my honest opinion. Melissa Flores just did an amazing job with the writing. I mean, who doesn’t love a good soggy doggy story? It’s the kind of story that will make your eyes take on the same shade of adorable piteousness as Doobie himself, really.

That said, the story of VR Troopers is also pretty good. Mairghread Scott has written an interesting mix of military and police drama into it that might interest fans of NCIS. Especially since this is one of the few instances we see of realistic military weapons being deployed against the VR Troopers. It’s not very effective, but it is at least interesting to see how real world weapons stack up against them. Combined with some thriller aspects in it at the end, and we’ve got a good introduction to the troopers and their world.

And of course, the art of both parts of this comic book is very good. All in spite of them having wildly differing styles to boot. Trish Forstner has drawn a very cartoonish style for Power Rangers Prime, which perfectly fits Doogie’s story. Meanwhile, Sebastián Piriz has gone for a much more realistic art style that also perfectly matches the military/law enforcement thriller story. It’s those differing art styles and how they match up to the story that makes this a very good comic book. Especially for the price.

Power Rangers Prime / VR Troopers: The Bad

Honestly, the only bad part about this comic is that it doesn’t have nearly enough Doogie. Seriously, that little dog’s story blew me away so hard that I wish there was more of it. I would’ve been perfectly happy had the entire comic been about Doogie and no one else. Alas, this is what we get. We just have to make the best of it.
