“Sebastian intuits that they are out of time and sternly confronts Ciel.”
Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 6 “His Butler, Despairing”: The Good

Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 6 “His Butler, Despairing” is great in innumerable ways, but the story stands out pretty clearly. Mostly because pretty much this entire episode is a deep exploration of Ciel’s psyche and his reflection on his journey thus far. He doesn’t really go into any specific details, but longtime viewers and readers of Yana Toboso’s manga will definitely the key figures that show up in Ciel’s mindscape. All of them are posthumous depictions, of course, But then, that’s the point of their appearances in Ciel’s mind.
And of course, CloverWorks and their animation team does an amazing job with the animation as always. This time, they put their animation skills into depicting some nightmarish and surreal scenes. Sebastian in this episode really shows off just how demonic he is, and the animation of that is as gorgeous as it is haunting. The surreal mindscape where everything can change in the blink of an eye is as good as it is thanks to their hard work.
Black Butler -Emerald Witch Arc- Ep. 6 “His Butler, Despairing”: The Bad

Honestly, the one thing I might take a bit of offense to is how the story depicts what’s essentially corporal punishment in order to help someone through a big dose of PTSD. Granted, this blow is softened by how Yana Toboso wrote it all as being morally ambiguous to begin with. Sebastian, for example, most certainly does not have Ciel’s best interest in mind when doing his devlish duty. He’s a predator first and foremost, and he really shows that in this episode. When even the story shows the cruelty to be more or less in the wrong, then you stop taking offense at it.
Beyond that, this episode is most definitely not an action-packed episode. It’s just not that kind of a story. If you want a bloody action anime, then I might suggest that you give Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Kaiju No. 8, DDDD, DAN DA DAN, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II, Zenshu, Blue Box, and/or Solo Leveling a watch. Those anime should have more than enough action and/or blood to keep you entertained until Black Butler gets to that bloody action. Which won’t be long now.
